New Research Highlights the Potential Benefits of STRUCTURE-Joint® for Equine Joint Health

A recently published study in Translational Animal Science examined the effects of STRUCTURE-Joint®, a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplement, on joint health and inflammatory response in horses. Researchers wanted to better understand how nutritional support may help horses adapt to the physical stresses associated with exercise and performance.

About the Study

Researchers evaluated 16 healthy adult horses over a 30-day period. Half of the horses received a daily serving of STRUCTURE-Joint®, while the other half served as an unsupplemented control group. To assess joint response, horses underwent a controlled inflammatory challenge using interleukin-1β (IL-1β), a compound commonly used in research to create mild, temporary joint inflammation. Samples of blood and synovial (joint) fluid were then collected and analyzed.

What Did Researchers Find?

After 30 days of supplementation, horses receiving STRUCTURE-Joint® showed several measurable differences compared to unsupplemented horses:

  • Increased levels of resolvin D1, a compound involved in the body's natural process of resolving inflammation.
  • Increased levels of nitric oxide in joint fluid, which plays a role in normal physiological processes within the joint.
  • Reduced joint circumference, suggesting less swelling following the inflammatory challenge.
  • Changes in several blood markers associated with metabolism and physiological adaptation to stress.

Healthy joints are only one part of maintaining comfort and performance. Structure Joint+ is designed to help horses cope with the physical demands of training, competition, and travel while promoting recovery after exercise.

Across the Structure product line, balanced omega fatty acids and antioxidants are included to promote normal inflammatory responses, immune health, recovery, and healthy skin and coat condition.

Why Does This Matter?

Performance horses place significant demands on their joints and musculoskeletal system. While occasional inflammation is a normal part of training and exercise, supporting the body's ability to manage and recover from these stresses is an important goal of many nutrition programs.

The researchers concluded that supplementation with STRUCTURE-Joint® influenced several physiological markers related to inflammation, exercise adaptation, and tissue health, and noted that the results warrant additional research.

Takeaway for Horse Owners

This study adds to the growing body of research supporting the role of targeted nutritional supplementation in joint health. For horse owners looking to maintain mobility, comfort, and efficient recovery, products containing scientifically studied ingredients may be a valuable addition to an overall wellness program.

As with all nutrition programs, results can vary between individual horses, and supplements should be used as part of a comprehensive approach that includes proper conditioning, hoof care, veterinary oversight, and sound management practices.

Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) Case Studies

Digestive health can have a significant impact on a horse's overall well-being, comfort, and performance. According to information shared by EC Nutraceuticals, Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders affecting horses, particularly those exposed to intensive training, travel, competition, stress, or periods without consistent forage. Because horses continuously produce stomach acid, management practices that differ from their natural grazing behavior can increase the risk of digestive discomfort and gastric irritation.

To help address these challenges, Structure GI+ was developed to support gastrointestinal barrier function and provide nutritional support for the digestive tract through a blend of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, antioxidants, and essential nutrients. The formula is designed to complement a comprehensive digestive health program that includes proper nutrition, management practices, and veterinary care.

Below are case studies involving horses that were evaluated by a veterinarian via Gastroscopy. Case 1 presented with extensive squamous gastric ulceration determined to be Grade 4 equine squamous gastric disease (ESGD). Case 2 presented with both severe squamous and glandular gastric disease. Find the full details here.

Case 1 clinical cutcome: Over approximately six weeks, Cheeto improved from severe Grade 4 squamous ulceration with active bleeding to essentially complete resolution of visible ulcers. The follow-up examination demonstrated healthy gastric mucosa with no clinically significant ulcerative lesions remaining.

Case 2 clinical outcome: Thunderstruck demonstrated a substantial reduction in ulcer severity over the supplementation period. The extensive Grade 4 squamous ulceration observed initially improved to mild Grade 2 lesions, while the previously noted pyloric lesion showed clear evidence of healing. Although complete resolution had not yet occurred, the follow-up examination indicated significant mucosal recovery.

What These Cases Demonstrate

These two clinical cases demonstrate meaningful improvements in gastric health following supplementation with STRUCTURE GI+, with both horses showing substantial reductions in ulcer severity confirmed by repeat veterinary gastroscopy.

These cases highlight the potential for nutritional supplementation to support gastric healing when incorporated into a comprehensive management program. As with any gastric ulcer treatment plan, supplementation should be used alongside appropriate veterinary diagnosis.
